Cooking in the outdoors is one of the highlights of the camping experience. One of the first decisions that must be made is what is your purpose. If you are hiking, then weight versus calories is your main consideration. If you are living out of the back of your car, then the sky's the limit. We have provided several menus and equipment lists that should provide a good background of information for your next outdoor family camping experience.

Below are some ideas that we have found to be very successful in two very different environments. One item that we do not include in the menu is drinks. Water is a very important ingredient to every menu. At times water can be gotten at the campsite. Some times it means backpacking water in and/or creating safe water.
